Vintage Morning Journal Portrait Series #3
Aha! I may have a lead on some information to these images from the Morning Journal. Hopefully, I will get to meet with the old MJ Photo Chief or research the images in the MJ library. I’ll keep you posted.
The subject in this image is extremely interesting to me. Who is this guy? Where & what is he performing? And what are these characters so intensely gazing at? The image really reminds us of a time past. The clothing and hairstyles are definitely something original to their time period. The performer looks very similar to a greaser of the 1950s. The performer definitely holds the persona of a rebel with his outspoken style & cigarette in hand.
Photographically, I’d say this catches the decisive moment. A look of interest from the two subjects implies some type of action in the distance. The highlight on the left side of the musicians hair really makes the image pop for me. Without that highlight, I feel like the image would lose a lot of drama - the subject wouldn’t pop as much from the background. The inclusion of a member of the crowd also lets one know that this is a live performance, not just a portrait session.
