Morning Journal Vintage Series #6

This is by far one of my favorite images out of the series. I think that this image really encompasses the night and the weirdness that happens. I’ve found myself many times in bars/pool halls at odd hours of the night playing strange strangers. Not to say this man is strange, because frankly, I have no idea who he is. He could have been the mayor, a gambler or a regular hustler. The kind of person that always tells you are no good at pool - until they have only the 8 ball left while all of your balls are still on the table.

Though the image gives off a very strong night time atmosphere & a strong sense of drama with the interrogation style lighting over head, it looks like the images was made during the day. The light from the outside of the bar seem to be bright with daylight and some highlights on the man nearest to the subject.  The subject looks like he really doesn’t want to be getting photographed, but the photog caught the decisive moment.

This is a very common look among subjects but I think the off hand gaze that the subject is giving the film adds to the almost shady character feel that is given off by the subject and the dramatic lighting.

Personally, I think this is a really strong portrait from the Morning Journal photographer (www.morningjournal.com) - who HOPEFULLY will be identified soon after I find some free time.
