Morning Journal Vintage Series #7
And on to the next image - another great portrait full of emotion. This portrait shows a great use of fundamental photography while capturing the moment and feeling of the children at the same time.
Framing subjects within the frame of the film, when done right, can really bring the viewers eye to focus on the subject while adding intrinsic interest to the image itself. The photographer uses the window frame to draw focus on the children, furthermore he/she uses the tear in the screen to frame a part of the girl’s eye. The sheen of the screen adds a haziness to the other subjects while putting the little girl’s eye in the tear of the screen renders that as the sharpest part of the subject.
These kids could have a great life, who knows. But the melodramatic look on the faces of these three children accompanied with the tears in the screen suggest otherwise. To me, the image feels like it is capturing some aspects of poverty in the Lorain county area.
The children seem to belong to, in what I imagine, a lower-middle class family with just enough to get by. A family supported by blue collar workers in a neighborhood comprised of the same type of families. In the sense that these children are all pair together within the frame makes me think they all belong to the same family. I think the window frame also mimics that of a picture frame which also leads me to believe they are in the same family. But, this could all be wrong because this is only based on the intrinsic information given within the frame.
What do you think?
